Controls Engineer

SMP’s first US facility, and only location of its kind will begin production in Tuscaloosa, AL in September 2018. Your tasks:

Designs PLC, HMI, instrumentation and electrical systems and applications for cost effective plant operations. Develops projects to improve plant operation and efficiency.

Advises the Engineering staff of appropriate control and instrumentation standards and philosophy.

Manages obsolescence of controls

Manages controls related Capital project activities, from conception through start-up, including conceptual design, budgeting, detailed design, specification development, bid negotiations and installation. Manages outside contractors and SMP personnel for controls related project work.

Assists the site in the maintenance, upgrade and troubleshooting of existing PLC and HMI control systems. Updates the hardware/software of existing systems to ensure efficient plant operation.

Researches new control systems philosophy, equipment and processes to improve plant operations.

Provides support for plant operations requiring control system Engineering, programming and design.

Provides training of plant personnel for controls related systems and technology.

Works closely with and interacts with SMP resources to determine long term controls philosophies, goals, objectives and improvements.

Coordinates controls activities with the Information Technology group at the site and Division level.

Delivers Competitive Advantage through Highly Efficient Operations and Excels in Compliance. Is considered a Subject matter Expert (SME) in their area of expertise

Collaborates with all groups to maintain continuity and open communications between groups for continuous improvement of processes.

Assists in the development of the annual expense and Capital improvement budget for the site.

Complies with company best practice, policies and procedures.

Knowledgeable in MSHA/DMME requirements and assures that the plant site and equipment meets the requirements.

Adheres to and enforces SMP Safety, Health and Environmental guidelines.

Performs staff assignments as directed.

Performs all quality checks as required by position and/or product and as documented within factory quality system. Ensures understanding and abides by the Quality Management System (QMS) and adheres to site and divisional quality standards and requirements and cooperates with departments in order to build consumer trust and preference by providing quality brands, products and services; maintains and ensures zero defect and zero waste attitude without compromising safety or regulatory compliance.

Your profile:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology required.

7 or more years of experience designing and implementing controls systems in a manufacturing environment required.

3 or more years of experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning system, e.g. SAP, AS400, etc., in a manufacturing/production environment required.

3 or more years of experience utilizing basic problem solving and quality improvement tools, e.g. 5 Why, Cause and Effect, Root Cause Analysis, DMAIC, Green Belt, etc., in a manufacturing environment preferred.

Proficient in computer skills such as Microsoft Office applications, AutoCad layout and drafting.

Strong communication skills and organizational skills.

Detail oriented, problem solver, ability to perform analysis and validate results.
